What Is Guaiac resin?
Guaiac resin is a natural antioxidant extracted from the wood of Guaiacum officinale trees, used historically to prevent rancidity in animal fats and lard. It contains guaiacol and related phenolic compounds that scavenge free radicals. JECFA established an ADI of 2.5 mg/kg body weight. EFSA reviewed guaiac resin and has it listed as an authorized antioxidant in the EU under specific conditions. Its use has declined in favor of more consistent synthetic antioxidants, and it is used primarily in rendered animal fats.
? Did You Know?
In the EU, Guaiac resin has a "quantum satis" authorization — Latin for "as much as needed." This means there's no specific maximum limit; manufacturers use only what's technologically necessary.
